I first took the July 2010 bar exam as a foreign attorney who had never before seen, let alone studied, American law [not to mention English is not my native language]. Bar Bri had provided a comprehensive overview that had brought me pretty close to passing the first time around (1422/1440) but the course was very lacking on the written portion of the exam. Their comments on the essays I handed in were not helpful at all and at times contradicting and their PT workshop (in the basic course) is excellent for relieving stress but not very helpful in actually mastering the PT. The second time around I took a private tutor (Steve Zikman) who taught me how to pass the written portion of the exam and indeed, I passed the Feb 2011 exam.

I signed up for Barbri because, frankly, so was everyone else. I was confident it would work for me - I did very well in law school and graduated in the top 5%. Unfortunately, what I expected from Barbri was not what I received. I went to the live course thinking it would be live. As in, see the person, ask questions when needed, etc. I walked in early on the first day of class to see that the only seats available were way in the back (think nosebleed seats at the Staples center). So, what was supposed to be a live program was really me watching someone on video. The lecture was very boring and structured, and nobody could ask questions. Frustrated, I decided to ditch the 1.5 hour drive to the Barbri office and did the lectures at home. The lectures themselves are alright. I don't think they cover everything that they're supposed to cover, but I understand there's alot of material so they do what they can. My real problem with the online portion of the program is their "Paced Program," which is supposed to keep students on track. However, they do nothing to help you if you slip off track (let's be real: everyone falls behind). Instead, a nice meter on the website constantly reminds you of how far behind you are, causing more stress than helping me. Problem 3: Barbri does not have enough graded essays. Sure, they have lots of practice essays, but there's nobody telling me what my weaknesses are. And even on the graded essays, the graders were grading generously. I thought I was doing pretty well - my grades on the essay portion of the actual Bar were less than stellar. And finally, though Barbri provides lots and lots of MBE questions to practice (my real weakness), I don't think the questions were that similar to the Bar's. Furthermore, I didn't really get any tips on how to answer questions, technique wise (I'm the person who narrows it down to two then misses the nuance). So, I'm rating Barbri 2, maybe 2.5 stars. Yes, they're less expensive than other programs, and everyone does it, and they DO have alot of passers, but for me, this one-size-fits-all program was the primary reason I failed. I guess their study habits are not the same as mine - I just wish my law school told me more about the different customizable options that were available instead of going with what everyone else goes with.

Barbri's materials are great but they don't teach you much. they have you watch a video then give you assignments to do throughout the day. they do not teach you how to write essays or pt's. and, even though they review mbe's and provide you a simulated mbe exam, they do not teach you how to do mbe's or how to improve your mbe's. if you don't need a lot of instruction, then barbri is for you. but if you need someone to teach you each portion of the CBX then barbri is not for you. I took barbri because everyone else did. I had no idea what barbri did for their students. I was a sheep and just went along with all the rest of the sheep. I failed with barbri. Didn't learn anything from barbri. Barbri just inundates you with materials. when you first get the materials you think the course is great but once you begin, there are too many materials and not enough teaching. I believe less is more for the bar exam. One good law book, one good essay book, one good pt book and one good mbe book or online mbe program. that is all you need. If you need help with essays take a writing course, if you need help with mbe's take an mbe prep course and if you need help with pt's take a pt prep course. As a side note, NO course is great at teaching all three areas. The best courses with have great instruction on two out of the three areas.
